Protecting teen wellbeing on YouTube across Europe and globally

Success is what you do with your ability. It’s how you use your talent.” – George Allen, Sr.

I have been a member of the YouTube Youth & Family Advisory Committee since its inception. (Don’t worry, UvA – it’s registered ancillary work!). It’s important work. I serve as an independent expert, helping to shape and improve the digital ecosystem of young people. I share the science with the people that create the space, they share their challenges and questions, and together, new ideas are born.

In my time on the Advisory Committee, I have helped play a role in the development of their YouTube Kids Quality Principles; their parenting support in supervised experiences; their larger focus on helping create a safer space; and their efforts to both protect and empower teens. Today, in Dublin, I spoke with with 250+ individuals at the GSEC Growing Up in the Digital Age Summit about YouTube’s newest effort – expanding the guardrails for teens to support their wellbeing. Special shout-out to David Wheeldon for the great chat.

Alongside my lovely advisory board colleagues (#Owls), I am proud to have helped shape these new guardrails. The balancing act between youth protection and empowerment is a delicate one in our digital society, but I’m certain we are much more likely to get it right if we all sit at the table – together. #Impact
